Are You Prepared For The Storm?

What preparations have you made to ensure your business is safe from the storms?

Are you prepared for storm season?

Storms and hurricanes are a fact of life for Hampton Roads. Regardless of size, it is vital that your business has a response plan in place to deal with situations that can arise.

Here are some simple steps that will help keep you protected:

Develop a Response Plan - Your response plan should identify how a hurricane can jeopardize your business and what contingencies you have in place to deal with it. Is your data backed up to a secure location? What happens if you lose power? Can you keep working if your premises are destroyed?

There are solutions available that can address each of these scenarios. Some examples we provide:

  • Desktops2Go® - Your business can become location independent using cloud computing
  • DisasterPROTECT Plus™ - The business continuity solution that keeps your data safe and online
  • Uninterruptable Power Supplies - Backup power supplies and generators which operate independent of the grid

Your plan needs to be reviewed on a regular basis as your business evolves and your technology needs change.

Create a Disaster Kit - Much in the same way you would for home, your business will need to have certain facilities on hand to help ride out a hurricane. These are also useful tools in the event that your premises will need to be evacuated. Things to consider:

  • Are you able to access your email and data from offsite?
  • Do you have email templates and website news prepared to notify your clients and customers of potential disruption?
  • Are your backups working?
  • Who are your emergency contacts for IT and network support?

Securing Your Premises - There are things you can do to help secure your premises and more able to withstand severe storms. There are obvious things such as boards and shutters, yet have you considered disconnecting non-vital equipment from utility supplies?

  • Ensure computers, cables and other equipment are moved to a safe location. This should be elevated to prevent water damage, and usually in an interior room. If equipment is unable to be moved, disconnect it if possible and waterproof it with plastic bags, tarp, or tape.
  • Remove local backups to an offsite location.
  • Secure all licenses, media and other software in a waterproof container or "zip lock" bag. These items should then be secure in a weatherproof location away from the elements.
  • Make sure you have your insurance policy and information to hand and in a safe place.

Keep yourself updated - There are plenty of online sources that can help keep your abreast of the latest hazards and developments. Many news services will offer to email severe weather alerts if your are a subscriber. Some of the resources we use are:
